Christo Redentor
History
- The idea for a religious statue was first proposed in the mid 1850's by Catholic priest Pedro Maria Boss
- The idea was dismissed and forgotten until 1921 when the monument was proposed again by the Catholic Circle of Rio
- The church set up a fund for the pupblic to donate to the building of the statue
-The monument took 9 years to make, constructed by a French sculptor
- Construction was finished in 1931
- The total cost of construction would be equal to $50,000 today

Vandalism
- In 2010, vandals took advantage of the scaffolding that had been put up for maintenance work to spray paint the monument
- The monument's full 130 ft was covered in vulgar phrases and references to recent murders and crimes
- Rio's mayor, Eduardo Paes, called it a crime against the state and nation
- The criminals have yet to be found
